  2. movable types in precise lines, thus, could not have been given 
  3. a more faithful reflection than by Descartes. We have earlier 
  4. cited his new consumer idea of philosophy, exhorting his reader 
  5. to go through his work ‚Äúin its entirety like a novel without 
  6. forcing the attention unduly upon it or stopping at difficulties.‚Äù 
  7. The notion of moving steadily along on single planes of 
  8. narrative awareness is totally alien to the nature of language 
  9. and of consciousness. But it is highly consistent with the 
  10. nature of the printed word. Going closely with this lineal 
  11. denudation of language is the associated impression of 
  12. mechanical repetition and recurrence which came to weigh ever 
  13. more heavily on the Renaissance mind:
